Dr. German Hernandez is an Associate Nephrologist with El Paso Kidney Specialists, P.A. and a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology & Hypertension at the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSC). Dr. Hernandez obtained his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco where he served as Chief Medical Resident. Dr. Hernandez also completed his nephrology fellowship training at UCSF and underwent Advanced Training in Clinical Research in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Dr. Hernandez then joined the nephrology Faculty at UCSF as a W.K. Kellogg Foundation Scholar in health disparities.
Dr. Hernandez has been in clinical practice in El Paso, Texas for the past eleven years. He has received various honors and awards including National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems President's Award, the TTUHSC President's Young Investigator Award, and the TTUHSC Dean's Young Investigator Award. Dr. Hernandez serves at the site principal investigator for several multi-center studies, sponsored by both industry and the National Institutes of Health, with the goal of increasing the representation of Hispanic patients in clinical trials.
He received the Clinical Science Research Award, from the NIH/NIDDK's Network of Minority Research Investigators in 2009. Dr. Hernandez is a member of several professional organizations and has been elected a Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology and the American College of Physicians. He is a Member of the Board of Trustees for the International Society on Hypertension in Blacks (ISHIB) and is on the editorial board of ISHIB's journal Ethnicity & Disease. He also serves as the Secretary and Treasurer for the End Stage Renal Disease Network of Texas (ESRD Network 14).
Dr. Hernandez' clinical expertise includes management of hypertension, acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, lupus kidney disease, vasculitis, dialysis, apheresis, and the medical management of transplant patients.
